Early History
Originally People designed and built sheet waves to replace the wave pool- creating artificial waves that were fun for tourists and matt-riders, but not terribly interesting to surfers. Going back as far as the 1920s, engineers and innovators around the world from Wembley, England to Tempe, Arizona to Miyazaki, Japan have invested hundreds of millions of dollars to create an artificial wave that would replicate the thrills and the challenge of the ocean, but they were always found lacking.
Evolution of a New Sport
In the early 1980s, real estate attorney Lochtefeld was a partner in the development of Raging Waters water parks in San Dimas, San Jose and Salt Lake City. Lochtefeld had a vision of creating water park attractions that were as exciting as riding waves in the ocean, and he sold his home in La Jolla and invested three years in building a new kind of wave machine to prove it. In 1988, a patent application described “A wave-forming generator for generating inclined surfaces on a contained body of water.” This was the new idea – the sheet wave.
Finally the First FlowRider was born in 1991 with the opening of schlitterbahn in New Braunfels, Texas, USA. After years of innovation and development the FlowRider Double has opened in 2001 in South Africa. Then for the First time in the History of the Water Activities FlowRider became the first ride to be placed on a Royal Caribbean Cruise Liner. Over the years many technical advances have been made and many FlowRiders were open from San Diego to London to Durban to Dubai to Seoul to Brisbane in Australia. Finally after 2 Decades of innovation and Design a New FlowRider is Born "The FlowRider Double With Lazy River". Also this Ride has an amazing new Surface which makes it the safest Ride in its long History.
Indian Saga
We at Leonia one day sat down at sunset besides "Leo Splash (A huge pool with Adult & kid slides)" in the midst of cool breeze watching children slide down, couples floating and others enjoying splash of water. It suddenly came to our minds that these people are waiting for something exiting different and something that makes their adrenaline rush much higher than what they are experiencing. We were very sure that a wave pool is not something which will make us different. We have sent our people across the world to see what new we can bring to India. After years of searching we have come to know that there has been a new Sporting rage that has gripped the world and its name is the "FlowRider". Then came the idea of why not bring in a wave where we can surf. After two years, Our Dream has become a reality and helped us in placing India on surfers' map.
The three surfers behind the success of this flow
The flow of the enthusiasm and excitement that started in San Diego, USA is now being spilled over Leonia, India. The adrenaline of surfing, which is kicking and raring to go for a showcase in India, brings in three international professional surfers: Mr. Richard Alleshouse, Mr. Andrew Thatcher and Miss. Krista Glauner to Leonia for exhibiting their expertise and excellence in surfing. These experts were involved in the process of setting-up and maintaining the surfing facilities successfully in USA.
Mr. Andrew Thatcher is an avid surfer, snowboarder and flow boarder. Surfing is his second nature and thus he has an extensive experience with Surfing Machines. Surfing for him is like an essential part in his lifestyle. It would be a difficult thing for him to imagine his life without surfing. His determined focus towards surfing was instrumental in his long association with Wave Loch for 10 years and is now the Director of Sales. His occupation with surfing inspired him to add value to the spread of sport around the world. He is a regular professional surfer and participates in various surfing competitions being held across the USA. He has also won many laurels for his technique in surfing. Andrew is visiting Leonia to ride the waves with his board.
Miss. Krista Glauner holds a degree in Sports Management from the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse. As a sports enthusiast, she has been associated with UW-L Women's Rugby, and Sports Activities Club Council. She used to sleep, eat and drink sports since her school days to college days, particularly the water sports, surfing. She is a surfing freak, who is currently working as Operations Manager at The Wave House, San Diego. She has been instrumental in taking the sport to new heights by organizing several wake board competitions at the Wave House, both for men and women. Also she's is a globe trotter participating in various surfing competitions across the world and is one of the leading surfing champions among the female contestants. She is now raring to go and surf the waters at the bay of Leonia!
Mr. Richard Alleshouse is a qualified engineer who has graduated from University of California, Berkley, a city that falls in east bay, which is an urban shoreline consisting of many cities. His love for the sport of surfing has made him occupied with waves day and night. His passion for surfing made him learn new things associated with the sport. His interest for water sports since his college days has made him to stick to the industry of recreational facilities and services. Though, he is currently an engineer at Waveloch Inc, Greater San Diego, he was a surfing champion in his college days and has won many competitions. The same spirit also continues even today, which keeps pushing his adrenaline to get involved more with surfing in order to implement successful turnkey projects of recreation. He is first a surfer and then an engineer who has contributed for the popularity of FlowRider. He is now coming to Leonia to test the waters for surfing!
